Fort-de-France, the beating heart of the island
3 min read
The lively capital of Martinique, Fort-de-France blends colonial architecture, vibrant markets and a seafront. A cultural stop between two days at the beach.
Architectural gems
The Schœlcher library, a polychrome masterpiece shown at the 1889 Universal Exhibition and later reassembled in Fort-de-France, stands beside the Saint-Louis cathedral with its metal framework.
Strolling through town
The Savane park, the seafront and Fort Saint-Louis make for a lovely walk. The covered market, meanwhile, concentrates colours, spices and local crafts.
