The dream beaches of southern Martinique
4 min read
The south of Martinique unfurls a string of beaches that rank among the finest in the Caribbean. Calm, shallow waters, coconut groves and lively villages: this is where the postcard comes to life.
Les Salines, the must-see
At the southern tip, in the commune of Sainte-Anne, the Grande Anse des Salines stretches nearly a kilometre of golden sand lined with coconut palms. It is the island's most famous beach, best enjoyed in the morning before the crowds.
Just behind it lies the Savane des Pétrifications, an arid, mineral landscape that contrasts with the lush vegetation of the rest of the island.
Anse Dufour & Anse Noire
These two neighbouring coves, separated by a headland, offer one pale sand and the other black volcanic sand. You will regularly spot sea turtles grazing on the seagrass beds — mask and snorkel are highly recommended.
Sainte-Anne and Pointe Marin
The village of Sainte-Anne, its seafront restaurants and the Pointe Marin beach round off a perfect day: a swim, a ti-punch facing the sunset and a true Creole atmosphere.
